The dassie (Procavia capensis) may look like a rabbit or a rodent, but it’s actually the closest living relative of the elephant and manatee—sharing similar tooth structure and even foot anatomy! Dassies have been part of African landscapes for millions of years and are often mentioned in folklore as watchful and wise creatures.

Location, Area & Habits

Dassies are commonly found across southern Africa, living among rocky outcrops, mountain slopes, and koppies. They are social animals, living in colonies and sunning themselves on rocks. Despite their relaxed appearance, they are incredibly alert and rely on lookout calls to warn the colony of predators like eagles, jackals, and caracals.
