History & Background

The aardvark (Orycteropus afer) is one of Africa’s most unusual mammals. Its name comes from Afrikaans, meaning “earth pig”, though it is not related to pigs at all. This nocturnal burrowing animal is the only surviving member of its order and has remained evolutionarily distinct for millions of years.
